- Tactics: the disposition and maneuver of units on a particular sea or battlefield.
- Strategy: a general plan to achieve one or more long-term or overall goals under conditions of uncertainty.
- Logistics: maintaining army supply lines with food, armaments, ammunitions, and spare parts apart from the transportation of troops themselves.

- Theatre: a large area in which important military events occur that is substantially separate from other theatres.

- Campaign: a series of operations (or battles)vrelated in time and space and aimed towards an objective or a result in the war.
- Battle: a military engagement that is well defined in duration, area, and force commitment.
- Skirmish: a fight with only light, relatively indecisive combat.
