The barbarian peoples that attacked ancient China were called the (Tatars). They inhabited Central Asia. The Chinese Empire originated along the Yellow River in northern China and over the centuries expanded to the Yangtze River to the south. Herodotus, the Greek historian, called them “Scythians”. Until they were conquered by Genghis Khan, they constantly threatened China and the civilizations to their east and south.
