Topic 1 – Session 3 – Big Civilization
The Franks entered history as one of the barbarian tribes attacking Rome. By Charlemagne’s time they had become integrated in the rising civilization of western Europe. Under him they fought a series of wars of conquest against the barbarians of Germany and northern Italy. These conquests changed the geopolitical dynamic of barbarian versus civilization. While some barbarians continued to invade civilized areas, the barbarians in general went from offense to defense.
