Topic 5 – Session 3 – Big Civilization
Barbarian societies advanced; civilized societies advanced even more. This was demonstrated most dramatically on the North American continent with the coming of the Europeans. The most obvious difference was the difference in military technology.
The next big difference was lack of political unity. Tecumseh recognized this problem and traveled all over the old west preaching the need for a unified front against the white men. This message was rejected by the tribes. In the battle of Thames in 1813 he was killed. While the Indian Wars dragged on throughout the rest of the century, hope for an eventual Indian victory died with Tecumseh.
