The first superpower in history was Persia. After conquering Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the eastern Mediterranean countries, it had a choice. It could expand south to Arabia, southeast to India, or north to the barbarian central Asia. To the east, China beckoned. It rejected all of these choices and sent its armies west.
