Topic 4 – Session 4 – Big Civilization
The Roman Empire was too big to last. It survived by splitting in two. The eastern half became the Byzantine Empire around 500 ad. The Byzantines, ruling the Middle East and the Balkans from their stronghold Constantinople, lasted almost 1,000 years. From here they fought off Arabs, barbarians from the north, and Turks. They blocked Muslim invaders from conquering Europe.
