Topic 4 – Session 5 – Big Civilization
In 1571 the Battle of Lepanto decisively turned back Ottoman naval power in the Mediterranean Sea. It was one of the great turning points in history. It took an alliance between Spain and the states of Italy to beat them. It was also the last great battle between rowing ships. After this battle, naval warfare consisted of sailing ships firing broadsides of cannons.
Encouraged by this battle, Spain turned its naval power against the Netherlands and England. In 1588, a great armada sailed north.
