Starting in Europe itself, this empire planted colonies in the Caribbean. Then Cortez conquered Mexico and Pizzaro conquered the Incas, establishing a base in South America. Later, the Philippines were conquered. For a long time the Spanish ruled over an empire that was the most lucrative and the largest empire in the world.
