Planting bases along the coasts of Africa, the Portuguese established themselves in India. The major regions of their empire were Brazil in South America, and the “Spice Islands” off the southeastern coast of Asia. Almost as important were its bases in China and Japan. Portugal had trouble expanding because of pressure from the other colonial powers.
