The most amazing thing about this empire is that Dutch merchants began it while The Netherlands was fighting for its independence against the two most powerful nations in Europe: Spain and the Holy Roman Empire. Though their land was small, their naval and merchant marine strength was mighty.
To the east they took over most of the “Spice Islands”. To the south they colonized South Africa. To the west, they took over several key islands in the Caribbean Sea. They hung on to these lands for centuries.
