Topic 4 – Session 7 – Big Civilization
The British Empire eventually controlled three civilizations that were among of the most consequential of ancient times: Egypt, Palestine, and India. It controlled Egypt through its own king; it acquired Palestine after World War I by League of Nations mandate, and India by a combination of direct control and dominance over nominally independent local rulers.
Independence movements began in the mid 1800’s. In the 1900’s Mahatma Ghandi turned Indian independence into one of the most interesting movements in history. It was based on non-violence. His core idea was that a large enough group of people could force governmental change just through non-cooperation. This idea could only have worked with a government with humane values like Britain. If Ghandi’s opponent had been Hitler instead of Churchill, the Nazis would have had the answer: mass murder in their death camps.
But since Ghandi’s opponent were British instead, his movement succeeded.
